It's a simple concept...I paint a lot and I don't have the space to keep it all in my house. I am also lucky enough to have a good job, so I am able to direct funds from painting to charities. Here are some quick answers to the questions I get asked most often about my paintings:
How big are they? It varies. Most are quite large, approx 1m x 1.2m but I have done some smaller work.
How much do your paintings typically cost? Again, it depends on the size and the amount of materials that go into production. Most work sells for $500 AUD and the largest pieces (1.5 x 1.5 m) have sold up to $5000.
What is a private commission? My favourite kind of work actually. Sometimes people want a painting and just say "here's the wall space and here are my favourite colours". We discuss design preferences, size, framing, budget...and then I create something unique for that person.
What if I order a painting and then I don't like it? Hmmm, firstly thanks for your honesty! Look, art and colour is an incredibly personal thing for each person. I don't expect everyone to like my work and healthy criticism is all good feedback for any developing artist. When it comes to commissions the fact is that I don't do this for a job, I do it for fundraising. I'd hate you to pay for something you do not like so all of my commission pieces are 'no obligation'. If you don't like it, don't pay for it. I'm pretty sure i'd be able to sell it to someone else!
How long does it take to do a painting? Hours and hours and hours! The largest pieces take about 60 to 80 hours to complete. The smaller ones 20 - 30 hours. It's very detailed and sometimes I feel like "oooohhh, this one is never going to get finished"....but it always does and you'd be surprised how much you can get done at night if you don't watch TV.
I have a charity I support. If I buy a painting from you can I ask you to direct the funds to my preferred charity? Unfortunately no, and I need you to understand this because I really hate saying no. The thing is there are hundreds of worthy causes out there and I get a lot of requests to redirect funding or donate to other charities. If I respond to them all then I'd never be able to make a significant difference to the charities I chose as my main beneficiaries. It just spreads the fundraising too thin. The other concern I have is that charities these day is "big business". Managing the receipts and transactions, and then ensuring that the maximum amount of cash ends up in the right hands instead of lost in administration expenses is hard work and takes time I honestly don't have. I work long hours at my job, travel heaps and need the time to paint.
So who do you support and why? I support CCIA (Children's Cancer Institute of Australia) because they are doing amazing research and need help. I love kids more than anything else on the face of the earth. I hate to think of kids getting sick, so I am an avid supporter of stem cell research.
I also support the Alola Foundation because in Timor Leste Kirsty Sword Gusmao is a cool Aussie doing an amazing thing with her charity. Check out the link on this site. The area I support is maternal health programs and money is to be directed to providing women with basic health care and products during childbirth. Timor Leste (East Timor) has the highest infant mortality rate in Asia and is a tiny country that needs a lot of support. Unfortunately the civil unrest in Timor Leste in recent times has seen a lot of charities hesitate in providing continuing support - this is the time when they need more help than ever. If you want to know more you should read Kirsty's book "A Woman of Independence". It's an amazing story. I am also looking into ways to support some fundraising in PNG but this is still in draft stage so stay tuned.
What is the medium of these paintings? Silk. All of my work is gutta and silk. I love the intensity you can get in silk painting....you can work with great colours. I taught myself....just started messing around one day to see what I could make and took it from there.
Where do you get your inspiration from for your designs? Anything anwhere! I am very very blessed to have spent a lot of time in Indonesia and India and the colours and designs in these countries are an enormous influence on my work. But I have also traveled to Spain and Mexico and I loved the art I saw there too. So I take in what's around me and then see what I can paint as a result. I don't ever start a painting with a specific 'plan' in mind (or if I do it changes before I finish). So every painting is unique and even I don't know what the finished product is going to look like.
